Subassembly Composer from the Labs

By Russ Nicloy, Civil Applications Engineer

The Autodesk Labs are an amazing place. You can see the future tools and applications before they are released. Currently on the Labs is a Subassembly Composer tool. Many times I have had questions as to how a subassembly could be tweaked to do something just a little bit different. Let’s understand, Autodesk can program a lot of subassemblies to do a lot of things, but they can’t possibly address every situation. The Subassembly Composer allows the users to address their own needs.

Now, if you’re like me, programming is far from my strong suit. I tried some in college, but let’s say that its not where I ended up. The subassembly composer allows the necessary programming to occur under the hood while the user accesses a user friendly graphic interface. Not only can you create operational subassemblies, but you can add targeting functions so that your design can be what you need in all the different situations you are going to find yourself in.

Here’s a link to the Autodesk Labs site for the Subassembly Composer Technology Preview. There are other things on the Labs site that you will want to browse through.

Oh - and the first subassembly I put together? Sidewalk with a base material. Because I’ve always wanted one!
